The Omega Review :
PwnPurdue Chapter
Massively Multiplayer Online Games
This is a post where I
WANT to hear from the viewers/readers.
I am going to list a few of my "must haves" for a successful MMOG. Please comment any of your own additions, disagreements, or whatever.
* Balanced Economy
* Solo'ability. (sometimes the MMO becomes to party heavy *cough*FFXI*cough*. I want to be able to go solo if parties are few and far between.)
*Customization (we all have a desire to stand out, even in a virtual world. even the dye function on many MMOs are a welcome bonus, but lets get a little bit more creative)
I'll add more as i discover them. please text your thoughts
Mass Effect 2
OH Mass Effect 2 why do u tease me so?!
W/ so many trailers and demos vids posted on youtube, i can't help but salivate at all the goodies heading our way.
the visuals are amazing, as always. the sound quality is superb. the new characters are very intruiging. basically mass effect 2 is a equation on awesomeness ^2 (squared).
Alas, such a amazing game will not be released till january 24th!!
I'll just replay the first installation till it comes out. I'm sure i missed something out there in the universe
Manipulation of Personal Social Image via MMOGs
Massively Multiplayer Online Games are the stomping ground of role-players around the world. Not just humans pretending to be elves, but also men pretending to be female characters.
Good ole gender-swapping! While character race has various benefits, playing as a chick can have
financial stability. I have it on good authority that girls that play video games are
Hot! So when a female avatar is asking for help, a plethora of men will typically run to the rescue. (I've legitimently succombed to this stereotypical action
/shame)
There are many men sitting at their computers playing as a female avatar for many different reasons;
financial benefits, ready aid from other chars, a pleasant view versus a testosterone man filling the screen, etc.
Of course players often raise an eyebrow in lue of honesty from various players. We should take each statement or confession from our fellow players w/ a grain of salt. I, for one, tend to exaggerate my real life when playing MMOGs (
I'm way cooler online). I've become less insulted when male players doubt the fact that I have a vagina in real life, it's a crazy world we live in.
MMOGs offer us average joes the chance to be a seductive sorceress, ravenous rogue, or war-torn warrior. It is an exciting, heart racing world out there in the 3-d realm. especially when we can look like computer graphic masterpeices.
Felicia Day, one of my favorite actresses (on youtube..) has done a fantastic job illustrating the going ons in MMOGs with her video series
The Guild. One of my favorite videos is the casts production of "Do You Want to Date my Avatar". It basically sums up MMOGs relationships. their [game based relationships] superficial and often short lived facets are amusing and quiet eye opening. Everyone should take a gander at this awesome video -

Zero Punctuation is an insightful ramble
Ben Croshaw, a.k.a. "Yahtzee", has created a ground breaking video series entitled "Zero Punctuation. And you've guessed it, there is no punctuation (minus commas and semicolons). His videos are insightful reviews of new or popular video games, though he does review older games that many viewers request his input on. The 5+ minutes of video is basically a run on sentance that follows the laws of proper grammar. His artistic style is quirky and comical, plus his australian accent and terminology add to the intruige and enjoyment. Yahtzee isn't the nicest video game reviewer out there, which makes him a breath of fresh air. Yahtzee started out posting his vids on Youtube and was quickly picked up by EscapistMagazine, a online video gaming magazine. This is a great site to get some breaking news in the industry and to kill time browsing various video contributors. After watching ZeroPunctuation, everyone should check out an episode of "Unskippable". Enjoy the vids and keep pwn'ing those noobs!
