Manipulation of Personal Social Image via MMOGs
Massively Multiplayer Online Games are the stomping ground of role-players around the world. Not just humans pretending to be elves, but also men pretending to be female characters.
Good ole gender-swapping! While character race has various benefits, playing as a chick can have
financial stability. I have it on good authority that girls that play video games are
Hot! So when a female avatar is asking for help, a plethora of men will typically run to the rescue. (I've legitimently succombed to this stereotypical action
/shame)
There are many men sitting at their computers playing as a female avatar for many different reasons;
financial benefits, ready aid from other chars, a pleasant view versus a testosterone man filling the screen, etc.
Of course players often raise an eyebrow in lue of honesty from various players. We should take each statement or confession from our fellow players w/ a grain of salt. I, for one, tend to exaggerate my real life when playing MMOGs (
I'm way cooler online). I've become less insulted when male players doubt the fact that I have a vagina in real life, it's a crazy world we live in.
MMOGs offer us average joes the chance to be a seductive sorceress, ravenous rogue, or war-torn warrior. It is an exciting, heart racing world out there in the 3-d realm. especially when we can look like computer graphic masterpeices.
Felicia Day, one of my favorite actresses (on youtube..) has done a fantastic job illustrating the going ons in MMOGs with her video series
The Guild. One of my favorite videos is the casts production of "Do You Want to Date my Avatar". It basically sums up MMOGs relationships. their [game based relationships] superficial and often short lived facets are amusing and quiet eye opening. Everyone should take a gander at this awesome video -
